Kansas sheriff’s deputy charged with rape

Authorities arrested and charged a Wyandotte County sheriff’s deputy Tuesday.

Michael Mastel, 52, is behind bars at the Wyandotte Detention Center where he is behind held on a $250,000 bond.

At a press conference on Tuesday, the Wyandotte County District Attorney Mark Dupree said Mastel is charged with raping a girl under the age of 14. They said he allegedly knew the child. 

Mastel faces charges of rape, aggravated criminal sodomy and three counts of sexual exploitation of a child who was under 14 years old, according to court records. Those charges stem from an investigation that began in October of 2018. 

Mastel has worked for the Sheriff’s Office since 2010. The sheriff said that he is still employed but has been placed administrative leave.
