The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is helping the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the Cherryvale Police Department investigate a shooting that happened Monday afternoon at a grocery store in Cherryvale.

The Cherryvale Police Department, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and the Kansas Highway Patrol responded to a call about a man with a gun in the G&W Foods grocery store around 3:30 Monday afternoon.

The man was an employee who was holding a coworker at gun point in an office. Police evacuated employees and customers from the store.

After evacuating people from the store, authorities heard gunshots coming from the office. The KBI said when they went inside the office, authorities saw the 28-year-old suspect shoot himself. They also found his 39-year-old coworker suffering from gunshot wounds.

The male victim was flown to a hospital in Joplin. He had emergency surgery, and KBI said his condition is unknown at this time.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital where he was stablized before being flown to a Tulsa hospital. KBI said he died from his injuries later.
