A Lawrence police officer was speared with his own baton while trying to arrest a 22-year-old Topeka man during a brief foot chase Tuesday morning.

Lawrence police said the unnamed officer had arrested Shane Paslay of Topeka at 6th and Wakarusa Drive after Paslay’s car hit a pole. Police determined Paslay was intoxicated and when they tried to arrest him, he ran. The officer was able to tackle Psalay, but in the process, the officer fell to the ground, landing on his expandable baton, which penetrated the officer’s body.

The officer was transported to a local hospital via ambulance, where the officer admitted for what appear to be non-life threating injuries. The officer currently remains hospitalized.

Paslay was transported to the Douglas County Jail where he was booked in for charges of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, interference with the duties of a law enforcement officer, driving under the influence, and operating a vehicle in violation of ignition interlock device.
