Local bar considered for national television show

A local bar is in the running to be remodeled on a national television show.

Debbie Harrod is the owner of Speck’s Tavern in Topeka. Her bar might be getting a makeover by the show Bar Rescue on the Paramount Network.

Speck’s Tavern is one of three bars in Northeast Kansas to be considered for the show. The other two are in Kansas City.

The show’s host is known for being aggressive and unfiltered.

“They are working a bar,” said Harrod. “Sometimes you just to have smile, and take it and let it go past you, and if you can’t do that then you can’t work here.”

“The producers all asked us who is that one person you guys all think can take it,” said Matt Maichel, a Speck’s employee. “I don’t know why but for some reason they all pointed at me being the one who might butt heads with him.”

The bar was packed on Wednesday afternoon and it might not seem like it needs any help. But Harrod’s son, Maichel, applied for the show and he said he thinks the nightlife isn’t reaching it’s full potential.

Besides expanding their menu and hours, Harrod and Maichel said they need to improve their work relationships.

“Sometimes the dynamics don’t work so well with the family,” said Harrod. “He wants the change and I’m not much into change.”

The bar is known for it’s fishing history. That’s why you will see their cans upside down in their refrigerator. The original owner, Harrod’s father, would clena fish on the bottoms of the beer cans.
