1 dead in head-on crash near Rossville

ROSSVILLE, Kan. (KSNT) – A woman is dead after a crash near Rossville Tuesday night.

The Kansas Highway Patrol identified the woman as Lucinda C. Mitchell, 63, of Rossville.

The crash happened around 7:30 p.m. on Highway 24 about a mile east of Rossville.

KHP said Christopher M. Mitchell, 61, of Rossville was headed westbound when the car hit a deer. He attempted to avoid it and left the roadway to the right, drove into a ditch a few feet, then turned back toward the road, spinning around and hitting another car.

Lucinda was in the car with Christopher. According to KHP, he was taken to a local hospital with a “suspected serious injury.” Lucinda died shortly after the crash happened.

The driver of the other car, Mary J. Gruber, 57, of Silver Lake was taken to a local hospital with possible injuries.

The highway reopened before 11 p.m.
