Advisors Excel employees give back to the community

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) - One of Topeka's largest employers is challenging its employees to make an impact in the community $250 at a time.

Advisors excel employees were split up into 60 teams and were given $250 to spend Wednesday afternoon to help make the biggest impact on the community as possible.

Lindsay Freeman's team decided to spend their $250 to prepare freezer meals for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House.

She said they wanted to tap into a need that people may not always know about.

"We all got together a few days ago and just started to brain storm organizations in our community that really make a difference and this one just came to mind, and it really resonated with us," said Freeman. "When they called, they had a need and we all jumped on board."

While they were cooking it up in the kitchen, another group stopped by to drop off items on the Ronald McDonald house's wish list.

House manager Jennifer Wilson said she knows the families will appreciate it.

"They're so incredibly grateful for anything we can offer them here," said Wilson. "All the resources we gather up here and can pass along to the parents that come and stay here, that way they can worry about their baby and spending time with their baby who is a patient in the hospital."

Robin Boudreau also wanted to help out parents going through hard times.

Her group made care packages for families with children in the NICU.

She said many people on her team can relate to that experience of having a loved one in the hospital.

"It's always good when you're suffering through something like that, a storm, to know that other people truly do care about you, and random acts like that can really change the tide for you." said Boudreau.

While the acts may seem small, the impact they can have is huge.
