A city utilities worker accidentally shifted a backhoe into drive while doing a meter pit replacement in one local neighborhood.
It happened in the 1100 block of SE 33rd in Topeka.
The worker said the backhoe got stuck in gear, causing him to travel all the way across the street and right through the front of this home. No one inside the home was injured during the crash.
City spokesperson Molly Hadfield told us that crews secured the scene and boarded up the front of the home temporarily.
The homeowners were provided with a claim form to begin the claims process with the city.
An internal investigation into the incident is underway. A representative from the city is expected to follow up with the homeowners on Monday.
