Did you receive less on your tax refund this year? Here's why

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) - People are getting smaller tax refunds this year.

The IRS says the average refund is down more than 8%.

Topeka tax agent Peggy Beasterfeld said this is the biggest change she's seen in more than 20 years.

She said the smaller refunds are becauses changes in federal tax code.

Lawmakers made changes to tax witholding tables and to itemized deductions.

"They changed the withholding tables and if somebody didn't go in and talk to their employer and change their w-4, they're probably paying this year," said Beasterfeld.

Beasterfeld also says filing early can give you more time to pay if you end up owing the IRS.
