TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – A 7-month old baby has died after a Tuesday crash where an SUV drove the wrong way, according to Topeka police.

A spokesperson for the Topeka Police Department said Wednesday that the light-colored SUV was driving the wrong way on Southwest Polk Street before crashing into a gray sedan at the intersection of Southwest 5th.
Three other people in the sedan were sent to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after the crash, according to the Topeka Police Department. The driver of the SUV was also in stable condition at the hospital at the last update.
Emergency crews remained at the scene past midnight gathering crash evidence for further investigation. The roads around the intersection were expected to open back up around 1 a.m., according to Topeka police.

Officers, Topeka firetrucks and medical teams originally responded around 6 p.m. to the intersection on a reported injury crash.
Photos at the scene show the sedan knocked on its side, while the SUV’s front was smashed in. Crews were seen taking people from the crash to an ambulance.

TPD is asked the public to avoid the area of 5th Street from Taylor to Polk and the 400 block of Southwest Polk as the area was closed.
