Fire fighters are teaming up with students to give suicide prevention talks

Local News

Two firefighters are working to save lives at local schools. Tyler Abernathy and Brandon Weyand from the Mission Township Fire Department are training Washburn Rural Middle School students how to support friends who are depressed or suicidal.

This event comes after four recent suicides at the high school. Students involved in the program say there’s always help for students who need it and encourage their peers to reach out.

Alex Hayes is a member of the school’s Make A Difference Club. He and the other club members are a part of the fire fighters’ presentation. He wants his classmates to feel supported.

“Know that someone’s there for you, and when you are thinking about [suicide], no matter what, get help,” Hayes said.

The fire fighters will spend more than two weeks at Washburn Rural Middle School as they try to reach all 800 students.
