Free Red Cross smoke alarm installation

LAWRENCE, Kan. (KSNT) - The American Red Cross is hosting a free smoke alarm installation event as part of the nationwide "Sound the Alarm" effort to reduce home fire deaths and injuries.

The event is Sunday, June 10 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Lawrence Fire Training Center 1941 Haskell Ave, Lawrence, KS.

The event is in honor of lifelong Lawrence resident Madison Halverstadt who died in a home fire this past March. The American Red Cross said she did not have smoke alarms in her home to warn her of the fire.

Red Cross Executive Director Jane Blocher said house fires kill seven Americans each day.

The Red Cross has installed more than 100,000 smoke alarms through "Sound the Alarm" events. In it's recent two week initiative, volunteers and partners installed about 800 alarms in Kansas.

To request a free smoke alarm, call United Way at 211 or go to GetASmokeAlarm.Org
