Funeral arrangements are now in place for Dwane Simmons, a Washburn football player killed in a shooting early Sunday morning. Community leaders are stepping up to help the family with the costs.

According to his obituary, there will be a visitation for Simmons at Abundant Life Church from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 4. A funeral service will follow immediately after.

Simmons will be laid to rest at Interment XII Gates Memorial Gardens in Kansas City.

Topeka Police said someone shot and killed Simmons in central Topeka after a party early Sunday morning. His former teammate, Corey Ballentine, was also shot. Ballentine had been drafted to the New York Giants just hours before that.

The Giants confirmed that Ballentine will not be attending the rookie minicamp, as originally reported.
