Officials at Lawrence High School discovered a handgun in a student’s backpack on Tuesday morning.
Lawrence Public Schools made an announcement on Facebook regarding the incident, which did not specify a time the gun was found. LPS went on to say there were no attacks or threats made to students or staff members with the weapon.
Superintendent Anthony Lewis said this was the second time a student was found in possession of a gun at school in less than a week.
“We need the community’s help,” Lewis said. “Let’s come together for a serious discussion of how to address what has the potential to be a dangerous problem for our community.”
According to the LPS School Board, any student found with a weapon on school grounds faces a minimum of expulsion for one year. The school board notified the students’ parents, and said “disciplinary action has been taken.”
