UPDATE: The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Highway 99 was open as of 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 18.
EMPORIA (KSNT) – Kansas Highway 99 north of Emporia is closed Wednesday after heavy rain moved through northeast Kansas Tuesday night, flooding a section of the road two miles north of the city.
The Kansas Department of Transportation is advising drivers that they are shutting down K-99 due to water over the road.
An official with KDOT said the water is one-inch over the road in some spots and four to five inches over the road as the Neosho River’s tributaries overflow.
An official on the scene said they would have to wait and see when the water recedes before the road can be reopened.
Motorists coming from the north can use Burlingame Road to get into Emporia.
