The city of Horton could be losing it’s only hospital for good.
Empower HMS is the owner of the Horton Community Hospital and is behind on payments and hasn’t paid its employees.
Horton’s Police Chief, John Calhoon, is concerned about the impact the closure will have on the city. He said this is something they’ve been fearing for months.
Without the Horton Community Hospital, the next nearest hospital is about 15 miles away. That’s just one of the reasons Chief Calhoon has already started preparing for the worst.
“We will basically be utilizing the Brown County Town and Country ambulance out of Hiawatha,” Chief Calhoon said. “We already talked with the owner of that ambulance service and the city has made arrangements to house the ambulances and have a small office available for ambulance personnel.”
Chief Calhoon hopes to transition to the new services as soon as word is final about the hospitals future.
Other Horton city leaders said the hospital doesn’t have to inform the city about whether or not they are closing.
An employee at Horton Community Hospital told KSNT News they’ve been working without pay for the past week.
