A man accused of stabbing a Topeka gas station worker Wednesday spent time in prison for a similar attack in 2013.

Anthony Ryan Downing, 33, of Topeka, is accused of attempted murder after police say he stabbed a Kwik Shop cashier in the head. Police have not indicated a motive for the stabbing, which left the clerk with serious injuries.

Downing pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree murder after stabbing a Dillons employee walking into work the morning of April 6, 2013. It came after a 911 call where someone reported a fight broke out in the parking lot. Police arrested Downing after finding him down the road from the now-closed grocery store at 1400 SW Huntoon.

A judge sentenced Downing to at least 6 years in prison for the 2013 stabbing, and registered as a violent offender. He was released on parole in August 2018.
