Local St. Jude patient decorates Dream Home room

Local News

This year, Topeka’s St. Jude Dream Home is adding an extra personal touch.

Avery Kiehl is a local patient, who’s been fighting a brain tumor since 2014.  This year she gets the opportunity to decorate one of the bedrooms in the home.

“We get to bring all of the heart right into the house itself. As a young artist, she will be inspiring the room that we work with, around her,” explains Sarah Williams with Furniture Mall of Kansas.

“I want them to come in and see a place that they can ‘ooh and ahh’ and sit down and have fun, enjoy their time,” says Avery.

“As a young artist, she loves colors. Teals, blues, and corals are her favorite colors. So I will also be using that throughout the home, to inspire grown-up women to use their favorite colors in the home as well,” Williams says.

“She wants it to be colorful and a place where people can go and relax and have that happy time. I think that says a lot for where she is in life,” says Brad Kiehl, Avery’s dad.

Everything in the room will be custom decorated and organized according to Avery.

“Avery will be choosing the style of her rug, the design, and then the colors she wants to see in that,” Williams explains.

She’s excited to get crafty but knows this is all for a greater cause.

“She sees it as a way to give back to all of the other children who are worse off than what she is,” explains Brad.

“It makes you thankful for what I’ve been through, and that I am this far!” says Avery.

Avery’s been going to Memphis for check-ups every 6 months, but just got some great news! She now only as to go back once a year.

St. Jude and The Furniture Mall of Kansas are revealing the room to Avery tomorrow.  You can see the room for yourself at the open house tours, starting this Saturday, May 18 at 9:00 a.m.
