Manhattan breeder pushes back after being named among worst in the U.S.

Local News

A Manhattan dog breeder said she was stunned to be listed as one of the most “horrible” dog breeders in the country.

Kelli Nelson, the owner of Got Game Bird Dogs, breeds Golden Retrievers from her home in Manhattan.

She said it is a passion project for her family.

Nelson said she was shocked when she found out that she was listed on the Humane Society of the United States’ list of “Horrible Hundred” dog sellers

She said she takes great care of the puppies and dogs in her care.

“We work really hard to treat our dogs correctly and do what we’re supposed to do,” Nelson said while fighting back tears.

The Humane Society cites a report that said Nelson had “inadequate shelter from the heat and cold” and that the puppies had no water on a hot day.

However, A spokeswoman for the Kansas Department of Agriculture said Nelson has been eager to make recommended changes to improve the animals’ conditions.

The department visited Nelson’s property in February and gave her business a satisfactory ranking.

Nelson said she has gotten a lot of negative messages since she was added to the list and wanted to set the record straight.

Attempts to speak with a representative of the Humane Society of the United States were unsuccessful.
