UPDATE: Shawnee County Jail has clarified Downing’s charge remains attempted murder. The Shawnee County Jail’s website listed Downing’s booking charge as first-degree murder around 9:30 a.m., but has since been corrected.

What appeared to be an attempted robbery at a Topeka gas station turned out to be attempted murder, according to police.

Anthony Ryan Downing, 33, of Topeka, faces a charge of attempted first-degree murder Wednesday morning. Police say he stabbed a cashier at the Kwik Shop at the intersection of Southwest 17th Street and Topeka Boulevard around 4:15 a.m. A Topeka police spokesman said their investigation has not found anything to imply this was an attempted robbery.

Officers on scene said the employee had a life-threatening stab wound in his head, and was taken to a local hospital in serious condition.

They found Downing on foot near 17th Street and Western Avenue, and took him into custody without incident. He was booked into the Shawnee County Jail.
