TOPEKA (KSNT) – A fight turned into a shooting Thursday evening near a local homeless shelter, and sent two men were sent to the hospital, according to the Topeka Police Department.

A Shawnee County dispatcher confirmed they had officers on the way around 6:45 p.m. to a report of a possible shooting in the 600 block of North Kansas Avenue, which is near the Topeka Rescue Mission. Photos showed TPD cars, fire trucks and an ambulance all surrounding the homeless shelter’s building.

TPD said officers found one man with a single gunshot wound and another man with a head injury. They were both taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A spokesperson for the Topeka Rescue Mission also told KSNT News that the shooting was outside the shelter, but did not involve any of its employees or guests.

Police set up crime scene tape under the Kansas Avenue bridge next to the homeless shelter. After investigating further, police said a fight had happened to the east of Kansas Avenue on Northeast Curtis Street, which resulted in both men getting injured.
