Topeka Girl Scout troop leaders are scrambling to firgure out how to replace thousands of dollars worth of supplies they say were taken from their storage unit Friday.
Girl scouts all over Shawnee county look forward to meeting new friends and doing fun activities they don’t normally get to do.
Leah Peltier is one many girl scouts who looks forward to camp.
When she found out about the stolen supplies, she became worried that she may not be able to do have that chance this year.
“I was pretty shocked and sad at the same time,” said Leah. “I really love Girl Scout camp and I love making new friends there.”
Troop leader Shelby Grau knows just how hard other leaders and volunteers work to provide as much as they can for the day camp.
“We run very close to our budget,” said Grau. “We coupon, we thrift shop, we garage sale shop, we do everything we can.”
That’s why the theft was such a huge blow.
“Losing thousands of dollars when we have a limited budget to start with, it was devastating,” said Grau.
Leah’s mom Jill knows just how much her daughter and many other girls around shawnee county benefit from the camp.
“The friendships and the stem activities, the confidence that it builds in these girls and you know, social skills, things that are so important you know, just outside of camp and fun,” said JIll.
In the midst of cookie season, the organization’s busiest time, planning for this year’s camp is already underway.
But now, they’ll have to start from scratch in hopes of replacing all the things that make it such an enjoyable experience for girls all over the county.
Some of the items the group is looking to replace include large 12-person tents, kitchen and craft supplies, but gift cards would be helpful as well.
