Topeka man arrested for August Kwik Shop shooting

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – A Topeka man was arrested on Monday by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task force for a violation of conditions of supervised release and a shooting incident at a Topeka Kwik Shop last month.

A federal warrant was issued for 39-year-old Maleek Lashawn Hughes on August 31, 2016.

Hughes was also wanted by the Topeka Police Department for a shooting incident which occurred on August 28, 2016 at the Kwik Shop located at102 SE 37th Street in Topeka.   He was charged with aggravated assault, criminal possession of a firearm, and criminal damage to property, as a result of that shooting.

Information was developed by the Kansas Apprehension Task Force that Hughes was hiding in the 700 block of SW  Western in Topeka.  Task Force members attempted to stop Hughes as he drove away from an apartment complex.  Hughes was able to elude law enforcement for a brief time but was later arrested while walking in the 900 block of SW Mulvane.

Hughes was booked into the Shawnee County Jail.
