UPDATE: Topeka child dies after falling into pool

Local News

On Sunday around 4:30 p.m. Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office and the Mission Fire Department were called to a Southwest Topeka home because of a one-year-old boy that fell into a pool, according to Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office.

The fall happened at a home on  2700 block of SW Stutley Rd.

Resuscitation efforts were performed at the residence and the boy was transported to a Topeka hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

Safe Kids Shawnee County wants to warn families that drowning can happen to anyone. Rachel Ault is a program coordinator with the organization.

“It only takes a few seconds of someone not paying attention for a child to accidentally fall or get into a body of water. Then once they’re in the body of water it can get life-threatening in less than a minute,” Ault said.

They have a number of recommendations to help people be extra cautious. You can find those here.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for the family to help cover funeral expenses.
