TOPEKA (KSNT)– A water main break has affected the intersection of SW 21st and Clay. All lanes of SW 21st Street are closed between Buchanan Street and Central Park Avenue.
A lot of breaks have happened along 21st Street and it’s because of the age of the water main. The City of Topeka is replacing over 2,600 feet of water main along 21st Street in 2022.
City officials said this specific water main break is caused by a ground shift due to high temperatures.
“We have a higher number of breaks in the summer and winter,” Ryan Woolaway, with Topeka Water Distribution said. “That is due to the extreme temperatures especially in the summer with lack of moisture. So that causes the ground to shift and things aren’t that flexible so they tend to break when that happens.”
Crews are currently working to fix the water main break and a detour route is in place. The road is expected to be open by July 14 at the earliest.
