A local puppeteer who caught the eye of Muppeteers is now putting on a show for a good cause.

Joseph Disberger will perform a free-will-donation Muppet show at the Columbian Theatre March 30 from 7 to 9 p.m. Disberger is a recipient of The Columbian Theatre Scholarship for aspiring artists, and has had a passion for puppet crafting and performance since he saw a Muppets film at age 9.

“It was magic,” Disberger said. “I said to myself, ‘this is what I want to do.’ From the second this happened I have researched, studied, practiced, built and performed non-stop.”

Official Muppeteer Peter Linz got in contact with Disberger and invited him to attend Beyond the Stock, a University of North Texas puppeteeting workshop. Disberger will get to meet the producers, writers and directors of the Muppets at the end of the workshop.

For his performance at the Columbian, Disberger wanted to reproduce the magic he felt as a young boy watching the Muppets.

“I won’t just help people, I’m going to save them from their corrupt version of reality,” Disberger said. “I’m going to show them that it is okay, and life is beautiful.”
