On Tuesday Missouri lawmakers and business leaders announced the formation of a panel to study the possibility of connecting Kansas City to Saint Louis with an ultra high-speed hyperloop system.
Leaders like Andrew Smith said the hyperloop would make the midwest more competitive with other parts of the country.
“When you look at St. Louis and Kansas City combined, you’re talking about an area that really has the same kind of potential as a Boston or a Bay Area or a Seattle,” Smith said.
Officials said the train-like pod would carry passengers at 640 miles per hour. That comes out to about a 30 minute trip from Kansas City to Saint Louis.
Early discussions mentioned ticket prices of about $30 each way, but it won’t be cheap to build. Some estimates say it would cost about $25 – $27 million per mile.
