BROWN COUNTY (KSNT) – A fifth-grade student from Hiawatha Middle School and his mother were killed in a car crash Tuesday morning in Brown County.

The Hiawatha Unified School District informed parents and students Tuesday morning that Herbert Whitebird, 10, and his mother Darlissa Whitebird died from injuries suffered in a crash.

On Wednesday, the Kansas Highway Patrol released information about the crash. Whitebird, 34, was driving a 2016 Hyundai Elantra northbound on Goldfinch Road at 6:58 a.m., one-half mile south of Powhattan when her vehicle collided with a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado. The 55-year-old male driver of the Silverado was wearing a seatbelt and KHP reported he had a possible injury.

A second passenger in Whitebird’s vehicle, and 8-year-old male child from Horton, was taken to Hiawatha Hospital and later transferred to Children’s Mercy in Kansas City. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported the 8-year-old had a suspected serious injury. He was wearing a seatbelt.

Hiawatha Unified School District Superintendent Lonnie Moser informed students of the deaths around noon on Tuesday. “His smile and sense of humor will be remembered and he will be deeply missed,” Moser said about Herbert.

Moser said teachers and staff are working to provide resources and support for students as they “cope with the loss.”
