People prepare for morning commute

Jess Danner was scraping his truck and laying salt to fight the ice Wednesday afternoon.

He says he doesn’t usually go out when the weather’s bad but he already has plans for Thursday.

“I’m going to the garden show tomorrow, and I got to take a load of stuff in this pickup so I’m going to have to get out on this sheet of ice,” said Danner.

Molly Hadfield with the City of Topeka said road crews began treating roads this morning.
She said they did not pretreat the roads because they thought it was going to rain.

The city hired a private contractor to treat side streets with chemically-enhanced road salt.

Crews are working twelve hour shifts using all available equipment.
