A child who said he escaped an abduction at gunpoint made up the entire story, St. Marys police said Wednesday morning.

The discovery comes after officers spent Monday and Tuesday searching for a man who the child said drove up to him in a red SUV, pulled out a gun and forced him into his car.

The child said he escaped when the gunman – a man with a devil tattoo on his arm – parked on the south side of town.

St. Marys police swept nearby neighborhoods, checked video surveillance from local businesses and spoke with residents.

They said the crime scene as reported by the child did not match his report of the incident.

Investigators said when they went to interview the child and his family, he admitted the incident had been fabricated.

There was no gunman nor was there an attempted abduction.
