Shawnee County Sheriff’s office work deadly crash into early Saturday morning


Shawnee County Sheriff’s office confirmed with KSNT News that one person has died from a single car rollover crash near University Blvd. and Westview Rd. early Saturday morning.

When deputies’ arrived on scene, they found an overturned car in a creek with the top portion of the vehicle submerged under several feet of water with the driver trapped inside.

It appears the vehicle was traveling westbound on SW University Blvd when it left the right side of the roadway striking a concrete culvert causing the vehicle to flip over and into the creek.

The 63 year old driver, identified as Ricky L. Leece, of Topeka, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Deputies were still on the scene as of 3:00 a.m. Saturday. Shawnee Heights Fire Department, MTAA, and AMR all assisted at the scene.

The crash is still under investigation this morning.
