The Kansas Department of Labor wants furloughed federal employees in the state to contact the agency “as soon as possible” to apply for unemployment benefits during the shutdown.

The department is also advising federal workers to be prepared to provide prof of their wages because state unemployment agents won’t be able to reach their employers. In a statement released Thursday, the state labor department said copies of pay stubs or W-2 forms would be considered valid verification. The labor department’s number is 1-800-292-6333.

Officials said if furloughed workers receive back pay after the shutdown, they need to plan on repaying any unemployment money they received from the state.
