Three poeple are hospitalized and some residents are without electricity after a car struck a phone pole on US 75 Highway at 126th Road near Hoyt Monday night.

THe Jackson County Sheriff said the crash caused the lights to go off in a section of the county south of Hoyt. A Westar Energy power outage map indicated those without power were south of Hoyt and the outage was limited in terms of the number of customers affected. Most of the outages were restored before 10 p.m.

The crash happened shortly after 6 p.m. when a northbound 2005 Chrysler Sebring reportedly struck a matress that was loose on the roadway. The car lost control, crossed the median and severed the pole on the west side of the highway.

The driver, Rebecca Gilchrist, 19, of Onaga, and passengers Michelle Hosler, 21, of Topeka and Vernon Tyrell, of 32, of Topeka were transported to a Topeka hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Southbound traffic was reduced to one lane until about 8:45 pm.
