There’s so much that goes on that’s bad in our city and the world. How can we make a difference?
I know what you mean. It can certainly feel like the inmates are running the asylum.
Seriously though, there are so many options for doing good and being of service, I’m not sure where to begin! I do believe in the adage that “it takes a village”. What that means to me is, if I see something I may be able fix, I step up and offer to help. Just last week, a child had fallen on the sidewalk and skinned her knee. I saw it happen. I stopped the car, helped her up and put a Bandaid on the ouchie. Now, was that world changing. No, certainly not. But I like to think I helped a little bit.
One of my favorite parables is the Starfish Project –
One day, an old man was walking along a beach that was littered with thousands of starfish that had been washed ashore by the high tide. As he walked, he came upon a young boy who was eagerly throwing the starfish back into the ocean, one by one.
Puzzled, the man looked at the boy and asked what he was doing. Without looking up from his task, the boy simply replied, “I’m saving these starfish, Sir”.
The boy picked up a starfish, gently tossed it into the water and turning to the man, said, “I made a difference to that one!”
With all that being said, I admire your desire to make a difference. Now, go out and find a starfish. It needs you.
