Dear Kim,

I have a special work event coming up that I have to attend.  It is a black-tie affair.  I’m on a limited budget and want to make sure I purchase something dazzling, but appropriate.  I see to many people showing up in tacky sequined party dresses.  How do I get the most bang for my hard-earned money?

Dear Rose,

There’s nothing I love more than a great party!  Good for you to be attending something so grand.  Choosing the right dress is always challenging.  I hope you like trying on dresses…

Seriously though, I don’t know how much time you have before the event, but it’s time to shop.  There are many lovely gowns available that won’t cost you an arm and a leg.  That said, there is some leg-work involved.  Your first step of course is to find a gown you love.  It may be in a magazine, or online.  Then I always suggest trying to find it (or something close to it) locally.  What looks good on someone else may not look great on you.  If you have the time, you can certainly order a gown online.  However, you won’t have the benefit of feeling the fabric and quality before you get it home.  Also use caution – some of these things aren’t returnable.

Ideally, to get the biggest “bang for your buck” stick with something gorgeous, but classic.  Avoid trendy, just in case you can wear the gown at some other soiree.  Think cost per wear.  Most of us don’t have the luxury of an unlimited wardrobe or budget.  Let your beautiful self and gown make another appearance.
