Topeka Police say they have ruled out drugs and gang involvement as a motive in the shootings of Washburn football’s Dwane Simmons and Corey Ballentine.

A gunman shot Ballentine and his teammate Dwane Simmons at a party in central Topeka early Sunday morning around 12:30.

Simmons died from his injuries. Ballentine was injured and released from the hospital Sunday.

According to the NFL Network, Ballentine is expected to make a full recovery.

A candlelit vigil is being held for Simmons Tuesday night on Washburn’s campus at the Student Union.

A t-shirt fundraiser has been set up to help Simmons’ family through this difficult time.
