TOPEKA (KSNT) – The U.S. Attorney’s Office released a statement Thursday morning, addressing Topeka’s gang problem.
“The U.S. Attorney’s Office is working closely with the Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office to address the gang violence problem in Topeka,” said U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom.Three Topeka men were indicted Wednesday on federal firearms charges.
Grissom said, “Yesterday’s indictments included several cases in which we agreed that it made sense to move forward federally. Past criminal history is one of the criteria we consider in evaluating whether a case should be prosecuted federally. The goal is to use our combined resources to make the community safer.”
According to the Topeka Police Department, police have seen an increase in violent crime, specifically in the Hi-Crest area, since the beginning of July.
In a statement released July 18, police said, “We do not believe this recent increase in violence is random and some of the incidents are related.”
