VITA program offering free tax assistance

News

Local volunteers are stepping up to prepare people’s taxes for free.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, VITA, has trained 90 volunteers to help low to moderate income families file taxes.

Through the program, people are able to save anywhere from $80 to $300 in tax preparation fees.

“I work with the best group of volunteers that really put a lot of time and effort into their training and working with people in the community,” said VITA Coordinator Susan Fangman. “It’s an awesome feeling. That’s why they keep coming back and doing it year after year.”

Last year, VITA volunteers filled over 6,000 federal tax returns and saved people $1,420,000 in tax preparation fees.
