35 players tried out of United States Pan American Games Women’s basketball team, 12 made it, and it was a bit nerve-wracking for Topeka native Peyton Williams.
“They read off in alphabetical order and so, I’m a “W”, so you can imagine,” Williams laughed as she awaited her fate following the trials in Colorado Springs.
But the wait was worth it for the Cair Paravel grad.
“Then it got to the very end and it was Peyton Williams and that’s it, and I was like, oh my gosh!”
Now, Williams will represent her country on the national stage in August at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.
“To represent Kansas State and the Midwest and Kansas is awesome, to bring attention to an area where people kind of fly over, so that’s kind of fun. Just playing with some of the highest caliber players is going to be awesome,” Williams told KSNT Sports.
“The international game is a such a wide open game and her ability to shoot the ball and her ability to make shots, it’s critical in the international game as you widen the lane and as you talk about the short shot clock,” said Kansas State head coach Jeff Mittie.
Williams also plays on the volleyball team and is on a 9-day tour of Brazil, so it’s going to be a very busy summer.
“I haven’t been to South American before and I get to go twice this summer, which is pretty awesome,” said Williams.
