NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Police are investigating after two men were shot on Humbert Street in North Providence Sunday night.
The shooting occurred outside a convenience store off Woonasquatucket Avenue at about 10:15 p.m. Capt. Mike Paiva confirmed Monday that one of the victims has died and the other was critically injured.
The family has identified the victims as a father and son – Hernan Avila, Sr., 46, who has died, and Hernan Avila, Jr., 23, who remains in critical condition.
According to the elder Avila’s wife, the violence stemmed from an argument with a group of men who arrived in two cars.
“So my husband’s trying to push my son away to stop arguing and told the kids to get back in the car,” Georgette Avila recalled. “They called somebody else, like four guys jumped out of the car and started shooting at my son. They shot at my son and my husband. My husband jumped in front of my son and took the bullets for him.”
Police are now searching for persons of interest in the case, according to Paiva.
Investigators were at the scene collecting and analyzing evidence until about 10 a.m. Monday. The parking lot has since been reopened to customers.
